Job Scope
A Sommelier is responsible for providing expert wine recommendations, guiding guests through the wine selection process, and ensuring exceptional wine service in the restaurant. With a focus on wine education, guest satisfaction, and service excellence, the Sommelier plays a key role in enhancing the overall dining experience and promoting wine appreciation among guests.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist guests in selecting wines that complement their meal choices, preferences, and budget, offering expert advice and recommendations based on wine knowledge and menu offerings.
- Provide detailed descriptions of wine varietals, regions, flavor profiles, and production methods to educate guests and enhance their understanding and appreciation of wine.
- Suggest wine pairings for specific dishes, considering the flavors, textures, and ingredients of the food to create harmonious flavor combinations.
- Present wine lists to guests and offer assistance in navigating the selection, highlighting featured wines, specials, and notable vintages.
- Open, pour, and serve wine with precision and grace, following proper service protocols, including temperature control, decanting, and glassware selection.
- Monitor wine inventory and cellar conditions, ensuring that wines are stored correctly and are readily accessible for service.
- Build rapport with guests and establish trust and credit.
- Collaborate with the Head Sommelier, Restaurant Manager, and Beverage Manager to contribute to the development and enhancement of the restaurant's wine program.
Position Requirements
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management, Business Administration or equivalent
- Certified Sommelier or Advanced Sommelier certification from a recognized wine education program (e.g., Court of Master Sommeliers, Wine & Spirit Education Trust).
- Previous experience as a sommelier or in a similar wine-focused role in a fine dining restaurant, luxury hotel, or wine bar.
Qualifications/Skills
- Strong knowledge of wines, including varietals, regions, vintages, and tasting techniques, with a passion for wine education and appreciation.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with guests, colleagues, and suppliers.
